Why this east London workspace is a love letter to the neighbourhood

When we sat down to design The Black & White Building, we knew one thing: we wanted to create a space that felt like it was an authentic part of the neighbourhood. In the words of Fora’s Special Advisor, Charlie Green, “ultimately, we’re here to add to the community.”

This meant partnering with the right architects and interior designers who shared this vision – and our long-standing connection to the area. Andrew Waugh, of Waugh Thistleton Architects has lived and worked in Shoreditch for more than 30 years, and his expertise in CLT made him a natural choice to bring central London’s tallest mass timber office building to life.

Iwan Halstead of Daytrip Studio worked with us on the building’s interior, with its 80 per cent British-sourced soft furnishings and sensitive use of timber materials and textures. Like Waugh, Halstead has a deep-rooted connection to Shoreditch; he spent his teenage years socialising in the area’s buzzy mixture of bars and clubs.
